Online fitness courses with AIPT

Want a career helping others get active? Our fitness trainer courses put you right where the action is.

Mix online study with real experience in gyms and sports facilities across Australia. Learn from professionals who live and breathe fitness.

All of our fitness courses combine practical and theoretical learning. With our Certificate III and IV in Fitness, you study with a group in our Campus Club, team up with a mentor or learn from an industry pro you know. Our flexible study model lets you choose what works for you.

Our Certificate III and Diploma in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation courses take a different approach. You'll study theory online and get practical experience through work placement in a sports or recreation facility.

How do I become a qualified fitness instructor?

Gym or fitness instructors wear many hats. They develop gym or fitness centre-based workout programs and handle the operations side of things.

Start with our Certificate III in Fitness. You'll learn to conduct assessments, design programs and give exercise advice that keeps members safe. If you’d like to offer personal training, you’ll need to complete our Certificate IV in Fitness

Looking towards management? Our sport, aquatics and recreation qualifications build your skills in program development, team leadership and facility operations.

How do I become a group fitness instructor in Australia?

Love the energy of group training? Our Certificate III in Fitness teaches you to lead all kinds of group sessions.

You'll learn to assess movement patterns, adapt exercises for different fitness levels and create programs that work for groups. Our practical training puts you in real gym environments for a hands-on experience. The online fitness course component will also teach you about exercise science and anatomy to help you explain movements and keep your classes safe.

How much does a fitness course cost?

Quality fitness education should be within everyone's reach — that's why we have different payment options. Our Career Advisors can walk you through all your options — call us on 1300 616 180 to explore which study path and payment plan fits your goals and budget best.

What skills do you need to be a fitness instructor?

While you can technically work in a group fitness environment without qualifications, we don't recommend it. You're dealing with people's health, safety and wellbeing — that's a big responsibility.

Whether you work in a gym or fitness centre, all instructors need core skills in:

  • Creating and running safe fitness programs

  • Customer service

  • Supervising the floor

  • Maintaining equipment

  • Showing members how to use equipment safely

  • Signing up new members and giving tours

  • Handling operational tasks

Your next career step depends on where you want to go. Love a specific type of fitness? You might want to focus your training there. Interested in working in sports and recreation centres? Our fitness courses can give you the skills you need to get started.
